The CAR-4010 is based on the new Intel® C206 chipset-based platform which offers a wide range of CPU support from the latest Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1200 family to the Intel® Core™ i3-2120 processor. It also supports the latest dual-channel DDR3 1333/1066 memory platform, which supports UDIMM Non-ECC or UDIMM ECC up to 16GB; up to two 3.5˝ or 2.5˝ SATA HDD or SSD; and up to four GbE SFP + four GbE RJ45 or eight GbE RJ45 onboard ports utilizing latest PCI-E Gen. 2.0 technology via Intel® 82580DB Gigabit Ethernet Controller with two software-controlled bypass segments (Fail-Open or Fail-Close). Expansion capabilities include one PCI-E x8 proprietary interface and one PCI-E x16 standard interface for a modular bay for Portwell’s ABN & NIP network interface card product family; fiber and copper port connections including dual-port 10G readiness with the following Intel® 10 Gigabit Ethernet Controllers (Intel® 82598EB, Intel® 82599ES with SFP+ Interface and Intel® 82599EB 10Gbase-T Copper Interface); 2x16 character LCD display module options that include EZIO-300 (with 4 buttons), EZIO-G400 (128x32 graphics display module with 4 buttons), or EZIO-G500 (128x64 graphics display module with 7 buttons) and VGA pin-header available for software/application development. Moreover, it implements an IPMI 2.0 feature on-board, providing more powerful monitoring and management.
Portwell’s CAR-4010 1U rackmount Communication Appliance is perfectly positioned for network security applications such as firewall, VPN, IDS/IPS, anti-spam, anti-virus and UTM, and network management applications such as routers, RAS gateways, QoS, server load-balance, wireless controllers, medical DICOM and PACS, and industrial automation control via Ethernet TCP/IP.
Module Design Translates to Customer Cost Savings
According to Mark Huang, American Portwell Technology’s senior product marketing manager, the company decided to design the CAR-4010 1U rackmount network server as a modular form factor in order to help customers maximize cost savings in today’s economy. “We wanted to include as many options as we could in this product,” says Huang, “and that naturally led us to think modular. This way, our customers have at least three choices for system placement: the basic configuration; a daughter card connected via built-in PCI-E x8 Golden Finger ; or their own third-party card. We provide customers with a wide range of CPUs options including the Intel Xeon processor E3-1200 family and the 2nd generation Intel Core i3 processor, so it’s compatible with the Intel® embedded products roadmap.
“But we didn’t stop there,” Huang continues. “We looked at even more cost savings by ramping up protection with two built-in bypass segments: Fail-Open or Fail-Close. This built-in fail-over function maximizes uptime for inline gateways, reduces costs associated with unnecessary downtime and provides our customers with a single supplier solution to further streamline their costs. Then,” adds Huang, “we looked at how we could help our customers grow their own customer base by making the CAR-4010 regulatory-certification ready -- including FCC, CE and UL -- and RoHS and WEEE compliant, which means that CAR-4010 can be used both domestically and internationally right out of the box.”
