New NAR-5650 supports Intel® Virtualization Technology

FREMONT, CALIF. -- November 24, 2008 -- American Portwell Technology, Inc., a world-leading innovator in the industry of Communication/Network Security Appliances, and a member of the Intel® Embedded and Communications Alliance, has expanded its high-performance 1U communication appliance platform to make it even more cost effective with the introduction of the new NAR-5650. By combining the latest Intel 3210 Chipset with the 45/65nm dual core/quad core Xeon® 3000 series and Core™ 2 Duo/Core 2 Quad processors in the LGA775 package, the new NAR-5650 optimizes computer power and energy efficiency to provide the perfect choice for software providers who need solutions that can support up to 16 GbE ports in a 1U rackmount appliance. Portwell’s NAR-5650 integrates greater computing performance reliability and manageability, improved power efficiency, higher throughput, faster memory and I/O bandwidth, and faster data movement into a single sleek unit that measures a mere 443 (W) x 457.2 (D) x 44 (H) mm / 17.4” (W) x 18” (D) x 1.73” (H).

Portwell’s NAR-5650 features a PCIe x 8 modular bay that allows the configuration of different Ethernet ports, including dual 10G SFP+ ports, 8 Gigabit RJ45 copper, 8 Gigabit SFP fiber, 4 Gigabit RJ45 copper or 4 Gigabit SFP fiber. The NAR-5650’s support for Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x and VT-dm) enables greater flexibility and maximum system utilization by consolidating multiple environments into a single network appliance and provides the best solution for VMware® virtual appliance applications because of its increased computing power and I/O throughput.

Available now, Portwell’s new NAR-5650 1U Communication Appliance platform is the ideal solution for security applications such as Enterprise Internet Security, Firewall, WAN optimization, Unified Threat Management, Network Access Control, Network Behavior Analysis and Triple Play broadcasting for both the enterprise and medium-sized offices.

Designed for expansion and prolonged product life

“The new NAR-5650 features two PCIe x8 ports or one x16 I/O port to ensure faster I/O transactions that help peripherals keep up with today’s high performance platforms,” says Mark Huang, American Portwell Technology’s product marketing manager. “It’s the perfect choice for Enterprise security applications that require multiple LAN ports and the latest Intel® technology from a stable embedded chipset that supports more than seven years of product life.”

“Our customers will also benefit from checks and balances built into the NAR-5650 to ensure a continuous operation,” adds Huang. “Error-correcting (ECC) memory supports a high level of data integrity, reliability and systems uptime because it detects multiple-bit memory errors and locates and/or corrects single-bit errors to keep applications running smoothly and prevent stealth data corruption. Up to 12.8 GBs memory speed—powered by 800 MHz DDR2 dual 6.4 GBs—and 8 GB memory addressability helps maximize system bandwidth and performance, and eliminate slowdowns from memory bottlenecks.”

“A single on-board PCIe x8 slot allows easy expansion with Crypto or other add-on cards to meet users’ requirements. The new NAR-5650 also incorporates a mini-PCI slot for wireless or other add-on card,” Huang adds.

Compatibility across the board

“We designed the new NAR-5650 to provide customers with highly advanced system performance and computing power combined with low energy consumption,” says Frank Shen, American Portwell Technology’s product marketing director, “because these factors are a major consideration when our customers are determining the efficiency of computing platforms—particularly in the arena of network security, where applications often run 24/7,” he confirms.

“We improved compatibility and customization so the NAR-5650 now functions with an even higher range of CPUs,” Shen adds. “By choosing our components wisely, we’ve increased system responsiveness and multi-tasking performance and are able to meet most of our customers’ specifications, with built-in expansibility so we can support all of their applications quickly and efficiently. And because we know that downtime is a factor, we’ve engineered up to three Generation-2 bypass segments into the NAR-5650. The programmable bypass mode now features real time software control, fail open or close on failure detection and a watchdog timer,” he explains. “We believe this has made the NAR-5650 easier to maintain and lowered the risk of downtime from system hang or power failure.”
