BACKGROUND

RAILWAY LEVEL CROSSING SYSTEM

Safety has always been the most important topic in railway transportation; how to reduce level crossing accidents is essentially critical. At most crossings, the level crossing system activate warning signals shortly before the locomotive or train approaches, along with barriers to stop crossing until the locomotive or train passed. And as technologies advance, more “intelligence” could now be built into the level crossing system to enable greater safety.

That results in a railway level crossing management solution integrated with crossing warning system as well as surveillance management capability. The design challenge comes from how to make sure every connected device and/or terminal can receive information without latency, as well as can operate reliably under extreme outdoor weather conditions. Furthermore, we have developed AI features into the system to actively monitor level crossing, routing all information to the control center and the locomotive/train drivers. If there are abnormal issues or unexpected situations, the system will alert the control center and the locomotive/train drivers to carry out emergency actions.

This use case demonstrates that a railway contractor in the United States has partnered with Portwell for the construction of an intelligent level crossing system. We designed the solution with an embedded gateway system that enables reliably steady connection between each device/terminal. We also provide project consultation service working step-by-step with our partner to deliver a highly-reliable level crossing system meeting their requirements and expectations.

RAILWAY LEVEL CROSSING SYSTEM FEATURES

Continuous Connectivity

The railway level crossing system needs to, in real time, transmit data and information between and among the central traffic management center and the locomotive or train drivers. And if there is any emergency or unexpected activity/event, the system has to alert the control center and drivers “right away”. We integrated LTE, WiFi and GPS interfaces to ensure all communication connections remain continuously stable.

Wide Temperature Range

Portwell’s railway embedded computing solutions support a wide temperature range from -40 to 70 degree Celsius accommodating outdoor temperature fluctuations with operation stability and reliability.

Secured Maintenance

We also have to take into thorough consideration on protecting data security and integrity when the level crossing system is due for maintenance. After observing the operator’s procedures during such a process, we’ve concluded to leverage their NFC badge/access control system to ensure secured and authorized access to the restricted areas for maintenance work.

EN 50121 Compliance

Portwell provides railway embedded computing systems compliant with the EN 50121 regulations. We also support the flexibility for customers to conduct in-house testing of EN 50121 standards at the board-level prior and at the system-level. This helps ease the stress in managing application of the EN 50121 series of compliance standards.
